MVP development cost in 2026: real numbers from 30+ projects
What an MVP actually costs in 2026, with real numbers from 30+ projects we've shipped. Includes web, web+mobile, and multi-platform scenarios.
When a founder asks “how much does an MVP cost?”, the answer is almost always “it depends”. After 30+ MVPs shipped in 2024-2026, here are the real numbers.
The honest ranges
Based on the 30+ MVPs we shipped between 2024 and 2026:
- Web-only MVP: $15,000 – $45,000
- Web + mobile MVP: $35,000 – $80,000
- Multi-platform product (web + mobile + admin): $80,000 – $200,000+
These ranges assume:
- 8-12 week delivery from kickoff to launch
- Discovery sprint (1-2 weeks) before build
- Production-grade stack (React/Next.js, Node/Python, PostgreSQL)
- Real authentication, payments, and basic analytics
- Deployed to a staging environment with CI/CD
What’s NOT in the “MVP” budget
Things that look like MVP costs but usually aren’t:
- Post-launch iteration: Once your MVP ships, you’ll find things to fix, improve, or add. Budget another 20-30% for the first 3 months of iteration.
- Compliance: HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOC 2 each add $10k-$50k depending on scope.
- Advanced integrations: ERP systems, custom APIs, legacy databases. These are unpredictable.
- Marketing site + landing pages: We treat the product and the marketing site as separate projects.
- Ongoing infrastructure: AWS/GCP bills, third-party SaaS, monitoring. Usually $200-$2k/month for an early-stage MVP.
What drives cost up
The biggest cost multipliers in our experience:
- Custom design: If you need bespoke UI (not templates), add 30-50% to the base cost.
- Real-time features: Chat, live dashboards, collaborative editing. Each adds complexity.
- Multi-tenant architecture: Building for B2B from day one is more expensive than B2C.
- Strict compliance: HIPAA, PCI-DSS Level 1, or SOC 2 from day one.
- Mobile native: iOS + Android native (not React Native) roughly doubles mobile work.
What drives cost down
The biggest cost reducers:
- Clear scope: Founders who have done user research and know what to build save 20-30%.
- Existing design system: If you have a Figma file with detailed designs, build is faster.
- Third-party services: Stripe, Auth0, Firebase, Supabase. Don’t build what you can buy.
- Single founder commitment: Fast decisions = no idle time = lower cost.
The “fixed price” trap
Some agencies will quote a fixed price without a discovery sprint. Run.
We’ve seen fixed-price MVPs that:
- Missed the actual user need because no discovery was done
- Blew up to 2-3x the original quote when scope reality hit
- Left the founder with a half-built product and no recourse
Our process: 2-week discovery sprint → fixed-price build quote. The discovery itself is fixed-price (~$3-5k), and you walk away with a clear scope + quote whether or not you hire us for the build.
What we charge
For our own MVPs:
- Discovery sprint: $3,000 – $5,000 (often credited toward build)
- Web MVP: from $15,000
- Web + mobile: from $35,000
- Senior team: Tech Lead + 1-2 senior engineers
- 8-12 week delivery
- Fixed price, weekly demos, source code is yours
We don’t do hourly billing for MVPs. The cost should be predictable before you commit.
The hidden cost: time
The most expensive MVP is the one that takes too long to ship. Every week of delay is a week of:
- Competitor shipping first
- Investor patience running out
- Team motivation decreasing
- Market opportunity shrinking
A 4-month MVP at $60k is often better than a 2-month MVP at $30k that you have to rewrite.
What’s a fair price to pay
If a quote is much lower than $15k for a web MVP, ask:
- Who is actually building this? (senior vs junior vs offshore)
- What’s NOT included?
- What happens when scope changes?
- Do I get the source code?
- Is there ongoing support?
If a quote is much higher than $80k for a web+mobile MVP, ask:
- What custom design work is included?
- What integrations?
- What’s the team composition?
- Can we phase the work?
How to budget for your MVP
A reasonable rule of thumb:
- Plan 1.5x your initial estimate for surprises
- Reserve 30% of total budget for post-launch iteration
- Plan 6 months of runway after MVP ships to validate and iterate
If those numbers feel tight, your MVP scope is probably too big. Cut features, not quality.
